☕ Local Handicrafts in Bayahibe & In the Footsteps of Ponce de León
Your day begins in the Bayahibe beach area, known not only for its paradise beaches and sea excursions to Saona Island, but also for its artisanal richness. Before leaving the coast, you will visit two emblematic sites of Dominican know-how: a coffee factory, where you’ll discover the stages of bean processing, from drying to roasting, in a tropical setting filled with the warm aromas of local arabica, and then a handmade cigar workshop, where expert hands will demonstrate traditional rolling techniques, inherited from Taíno culture and enriched by Spanish colonists. These visits immerse you in the daily life of Dominicans and introduce you to products deeply rooted in the island’s history and gastronomy.
After this local immersion, it’s time to head southeast to Boca de Yuma, a hidden gem on the Caribbean coast still untouched by mass tourism. On the way, a cultural stop is a must: a visit to the Ponce de León Museum, a colonial manor built in the 16th century. This perfectly preserved historical site was once the home of Juan Ponce de León, a famous Spanish conquistador and governor of Hispaniola, who left from these lands to conquer Puerto Rico before searching for the mythical Fountain of Youth in Florida. The house, with its coral stone walls, period furniture, archaeological artifacts, and ancient frescoes, transports you into the heart of New World history. From the garden, the view of the palm trees and tropical coast already offers a taste of what awaits you in Boca de Yuma…
🌴 Boca de Yuma: Where History, Postcard Landscapes, and Caribbean Flavors Meet
You then arrive in Boca de Yuma, an authentic fishing village perched on a steep cliff, overlooking a turquoise bay. Located near the Eastern National Park, this quiet village, still off the beaten tourist path, has preserved its Dominican soul: colorful fishing boats float with the rhythm of the waves, simple homes radiate a soft Caribbean charm, and locals welcome you with sincere smiles.
Lunch is enjoyed at a panoramic restaurant, suspended above the Caribbean Sea. At your table, enjoy freshly caught seafood, grilled Dominican-style, with a chilled glass of wine — perfect for relaxing while gazing at the endless horizon.
After this delicious break, you’ll set off on a peaceful boat ride on the Yuma River, aboard a typical wooden boat guided by a local captain. The river winds through dense tropical vegetation, where palm trees line dramatic cliffs. On the riverbanks, you may spot the entrance to small limestone caves, including the famous Cofresí Cave, once used as a hideout in the 19th century by Pedro Cifuentes, nicknamed the Dominican Robinson Crusoe. The setting evokes a sense of adventure: calm waters, dappled light through the foliage, the whispers of the forest…
If navigation conditions allow, your captain may take you further to a secluded cove, all the way to a hidden village only accessible by sea. Here, you’ll discover another side of the Dominican Republic: that of a rural village, peaceful and timeless. You’ll meet friendly, curious locals and explore tropical fruit trees, enjoying a simple and authentic moment with families living in harmony with nature.
A unique escape, far from the beaten path, to truly absorb the real Dominican way of life.

🌿 Return to Benerito: Local Life, History, and Relaxation
After exploring the hidden wonders of Boca de Yuma, we head back comfortably aboard an air-conditioned taxi for a fascinating stop in the heart of the sugarcane fields, stretching under the tropical heat. This stop will allow you to learn more about the historical importance of sugarcane in the Dominican economy and its major role since colonial times. And if you travel during the harvest season, you may even have the chance to taste freshly cut sugarcane — a sweet and refreshing experience that’s typical of the country.
We continue our journey to the village of Benerito, a traditional rural village, where time seems to stand still. This village has preserved its authentic Dominican charm through centuries. A short walking tour of the village awaits: you’ll discover its quaint church, its lively local market full of fresh produce and local spices, and the baseball field, a true gathering place for locals and a staple of life in Dominican villages. You’ll get a real feel for local life, far from usual tourist circuits.
If you wish, we’ll also stop at a typical colmado, where locals gather to chat over a cold beer or another refreshing drink — a friendly moment to better understand Dominican culture.
This authentic stop will be a lovely way to end your day before heading back to your hotel, taking with you warm memories of this unique journey into the heart of the Dominican Republic.
