Where can you see starfish on Saona Island?

An iconic natural treasure of the Dominican Republic

Among the many wonders to discover during a stay in the Dominican Republic, Saona Island ranks among the must-sees. Located off the coast of Bayahibe, in the Cotubanamá National Park, it attracts thousands of visitors each year in search of paradisiacal beaches, crystal-clear waters… and unforgettable marine encounters.

Among these encounters, starfish hold a special place. Their unique shape and orange or reddish hue fascinate both young and old. But be careful: not all areas allow you to observe them easily or in good conditions.

Where to see starfish on Saona?

The best place to observe starfish on Saona is undoubtedly the natural pool of Las Palmillas, a shallow site located between Bayahibe and the island itself. This white sandbank, submerged in crystal-clear turquoise-toned water, creates an ideal environment for these marine creatures.

Unlike other areas that are too crowded or too deep, Las Palmillas is a true little natural paradise, often nicknamed “the largest natural pool in the Caribbean.” You literally walk in 1 meter of water, which makes it easy to spot starfish on the sand without disturbing them.

🐚  Important: Starfish are alive! They should never be taken out of the water or handled. At Quetzal Excursions, we raise awareness among all our travelers about protecting this fragile ecosystem.

Which excursion to choose to see starfish?

Not all excursions go through the natural pool. Some make shorter stops or visit different areas of Saona. For responsible and guaranteed observation, we recommend our exclusive option:

What is the best time to see starfish?

Starfish are present all year round in the region, but visibility mostly depends on the sea conditions. The months from December to August often offer calmer seas and thus better observation. We also recommend leaving early in the morning to avoid crowds and enjoy even clearer water.

Tips for a successful observation

    • Choose an eco-friendly excursion respecting marine life

    • Bring sunglasses, swimsuit, towel, and biodegradable sunscreen

    • Don’t forget your waterproof camera!

    • Never touch the starfish (not even for a photo)
